Barn Project Updates

On South Main Street in the historic village of Old Salem, North Carolina, the Winkler Bakery has been in continuous, operation since 1800. This functional birdhouse is intended for outdoor use, but when used as a decorative piece, the hinged roof lifts up so that the house becomes a gift box to be filled with your own homemade baked goods. A small pin on the left side will secure the roof in the down position when used outdoors. The Bee-Hive oven on the right is an exacting detail of the actual, working oven. Constructed of exterior grade ply-board, pine roof shingles and poly resin details. Item Dimensions: 12” H x 12” W x 9” D.

Note: Climate and the elements will weather the house and change its appearance over time; however, weathering will add to the house's natural charm without compromising its function. Should you want to preserve the finish (paint), you should select a polyurethane product that is recommended for marine use (UV Rated) that will not turn the white paint yellow. You should expect that once left outside, the product will weather and require refinishing.

All of our pieces are intended for use outdoors.

The houses are fully functional, with removable back walls for easy cleaning.

The hole openings (Excluding Purple Martin Houses) are designed to accommodate common cavity dwellers such as Wrens, Finches, Chickadees, Nuthatches and Titmice.

The feeders will attract all types of wild birds.

The houses and feeders are constructed of:

Western Red Cedar or Pine shingles for the roof. Exterior grade ply-board for the walls, floor and underlying roof board. Kiln-dried hardwoods, pine and poly-resin for the details. Outdoor, non-toxic paint.

The Pedestals are constructed of exterior grade ply-board, kiln-dried hardwood and exterior grade, non-toxic paint.

The pedestals are to be placed on a flat dry surface, such as stone or cement. They should not be placed directly on grass or dirt. You may suggest a base of pressure treated wood be put beneath the underside ofthe pedestal footing or base and then secure the bottom of the pedestals to the platform.

With time, all of our products will need to be refinished when leftoutdoors. The shingles (cedar) will patina to a silvery color and thepiece will become weathered and distressed.

We have not used any chemicals or sealants that can be harmful towildlife.
